The Festivities of Saint Sebastian: Palma’s Festive Heart in January

Every January, Palma de Mallorca fills with light, music, and tradition to celebrate the Festivities of Saint Sebastian, the city’s patron saint.

It is one of the most anticipated events of the year for both residents and visitors, an unmissable occasion to discover the most authentic and festive soul of the Mallorcan capital.

A bit of history

Saint Sebastian was named patron of Palma in the 17th century, after, according to tradition, the city was protected from a devastating plague epidemic. Since then, every January 20th, he is honored with celebrations that combine history, popular culture, and a unique festive atmosphere in the Mediterranean.

What happens during the festivities?

The Festivities of Saint Sebastian transform Palma for several days with a program full of activities for all audiences:

Bonfires and street parties: on the night before the main day, streets and squares fill with bonfires where meats are roasted, and live music lasts until late at night.

Open-air concerts: local, national, and international artists perform on different stages across the city, creating a grand urban celebration.

Correfocs: one of the most spectacular moments, with devils, fire, and pyrotechnics parading through the streets in a display full of energy and tradition.

Cultural and family activities: in the days leading up to the celebration, exhibitions, children’s activities, gastronomic events, and cultural proposals showcase the richness of Mallorcan culture.

Fireworks: the grand finale is an impressive fireworks show that lights up the Palma sky.
